CSM organises conferences and meetings to highlight issues of current interest and debate. Most are open to all though some are especially designed for younger people. CSM’s most memorable event in recent years was a day conference to launch the ‘Faith in Politics’ report during the run-up to the General Election of 2001. Speakers at this event included the Prime Minister, Bob Geldof, Jim Wallis, Hilary Armstrong MP, Indarjit Singh and Steve Chalke.

Two flagships events in CSM’s calendar are the Tawney and Wheatley Lectures. Given in honour of, respectively, the eminent Christian socialist and Labour Party activist RH Tawney (1880-1962) and the pioneer of Christian Socialism in Scotland and Minister for Health and Housing in Labour’s first government of 1924, John Wheatley (1869-1930), both attract speakers of the highest calibre. The Wheatley Lecture is always held in Scotland. In 1993 the Tawney Lecture was given by the then leader of the Labour Party, the Rt Hon John Smith MP. This year’s lecture was given by David Lammy MP.
